Epilogue

When the wave hit Atlantis, it did so with a much greater force than Jada had anticipated. Still the Life Dome held.

With one exception.

Allison would later tell the others the link that broke was one bound primarily with threads of earth, but none of them could say why that particular piece failed. In any case, it proved to be fatal to one member of their party. Talon found Tiana’s body at the shoreline of Atlantis’s innermost ring, a sliver of dome piercing her heart. Eyes glazed and unseeing, the tiny woman looked at peace for the first time since Talon had met her.

The God of Earth howled his rage and loss, and the earth trembled everywhere because of it.

“Can you honestly say she is not better off?” The silky smooth voice of Chaos emanated from behind the God of Earth. Spinning, Talon took a mighty swing at the ancient god, but missed his mark by a great length.

“How can you possibly say that?” Talon stalked toward the menace that was Chaos. “She was alive! Alive and with her friends. Where is she now? The underworld?

The ‘great beyond?’ Wherever she is, she is alone.”

Chaos merely laughed and sidestepped the larger man. “How do you know she is alone, hm? I have saved your precious Tiana and given her something you never did.”

Talon stilled, his eyes narrowing. “What did you do?” His hoarse whisper held a wealth of emotion. He hadn’t realized how quickly the little sprite had gotten under his skin until he saw her lifeless body.

“I gave her another form, in this life. You may find her if you wish to look, but only if she chooses to let you.”

Talon had never been so confused and hurt in all his years. To have found someone as rare as Tiana, a woman who understood the call of the earth, even if she wasn’t able to hear it herself, was a rare gift indeed.

“Tiana was meant to be much like Allison --a goddess in human’s clothing. But something happened and she received all the instincts, but none of the power. Now, she has both.” Chaos smiled, but instead of looking evil or smug as he expected, Chaos looked strained to Talon. If he didn’t know better, he could have almost said Chaos wasn’t happy about the arrangement.

“How can killing her have helped her situation?” Talon’s anger and grief were getting the better of him.

“Oh, make no mistake, she is where she wants to be, but I did not cause the dome to fail. Only the Goddess of All Things could explain that. But once done, I had the ability to give Tiana a choice between life and death.” He looked at Talon, his gaze never faltering. “She chose life, but a life without emotional entanglements.”

“I don’t understand.” Talon held the ancient god’s gaze, hoping, praying his suspicion was wrong.

“She is a wood nymph. Ever seeking her own pleasure, never mindful of the needs of others. Her heart is her own, and she will never give it to anyone as long as she chooses this form.
